Spring is a great time to undertake projects! What could be better than getting the “cobwebs” out of your brain? So, how do we do that you might ask?
Try something you’ve never done before. Take up learning how to fly, learn a new language, or how to play an instrument. Many of us have been just going stir crazy waiting for spring. We don’t necessarily need warmer temperatures to begin something new. Go out there and buy those paints, take your camera and go for a walk. There’s beauty no matter where you look. The point is to be brave and be in the present…. just do it.
Did you ever think of meditation? It’s not easy to clear your mind, especially with all that is going on around us. Try just closing your eyes and inhaling deeply, really think about the breath, then slowly let your breath out. I’ve used this and it helps you rest and rejuvenate. Another form of relaxation is “feather” breathing. Again, inhale deeply, then slowly, ever so slowly, exhale as though you do not want to disturb the imaginary feather in front of you. Don’t knock it until you try it!
One thing for sure, as we grow older, staying up late at night isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be! Respecting your biological clock can not be ignored. Lack of sleep lowers your immune system, makes it harder for you to cope, and makes you an all-around “grumpy” soul. Our parents had it right, into bed by 8 P.M. or 9 P.M. and up by 6:30 A.M. or 7 P.M., The rest gives you the tools you need to take on the day full on. We’re never too young or too old to “get” with it.
Now, where have we heard this before, “you’ve got to MOVE IT!” Did you know that exercise makes the brain bigger, especially the areas needed for memory? Have you noticed that even with a small walk, you come home energized? It helps the heart pump oxygen and nutrients to the brain, strengthening cells and helps nerve cells communicate more effectively. It gives you a huge endorphin surge.
What about something as simple as laughing? The best laugh is one that has tears running down your face. It’s a great stress reliever. And one more thing; what about practicing gratitude? Tune out the negative. Live without social media for a few days or permanently. Focus on the positive. It’s all right there, we just have to look for it.
